France's Nahema

case study: Pinpoint accuracy allows room for luxury extras

LATEST UPDATE: (September 2008)

Construction of Nahema's new 35 metre luxury catamaran is well underway, with the first hull demoulded recently in Marseilles, France.

The process went without a hitch.

"Thank you mouldCAM and congratulations on a good job" said Stephane Della, Technical Manager for Nahema, France "The first hull has been released very successfully without any issues".

One of the significant advantages of using tooling technology in boat design, as discovered by European boatbuilder Nahema, is its ability to deliver pinpoint accuracy.

When Nahema outsourced production of its new 35 metre luxury catamaran, the Nahema 120, it searched the world for innovative, 'best-in-class' partners. This search led to the commissioning of mouldCAM to produce the moulds for the new Nahema 120’s hull and deck.

"The degree of accuracy we were able to provide in translating the 3D design into a finished mould means Nahema’s 120 will be at the cutting-edge of boat production," said mouldCam’s Managing Director, Toby Whitfield.

Being able to produce moulds for Nahema’s hull and deck to within 1mm per 10 m accuracy means little or no fairing is required, keeping weight to a minimum. In doing so, Nahema has been able to build in many luxury extras without affecting the speed or performance of this sleek catamaran.

Production of the hull mould began in late 2006 in Brisbane, Australia. Nahema’s designers remained in Europe while production was underway, and were able to track progress electronically. Once the hull was complete, Nahema flew to Australia for the final sign off.

The hull mould has now been delivered to Marseilles, France and Nahema will shortly begin construction. To aid this, mouldCAM were able to build key reference markers into the mould. These markers will be used by Nahema’s boat builders to identify specific positionings during the build process including portholes, draft water lines and seating.

mouldCAM are currently producing Nahema 120’s wet deck, which has been scheduled for delivery mid 2008. By staggering production and delivery, Nahema has been able to streamline the production process significantly.

Stay tuned for further updates as the Nahema 120 takes shape.
