Following the success of the Ellen MacArthur boat build, mouldCAM were invited to partner again with Boatspeed on production of Thomas Colville’s maxi multi-hull Sodeb'O.
The brief? To create the fastest boat one person can sail around the world non-stop in record time. Both the deck and hull structure had to be as lightweight as possible. To achieve this, mouldCAM translated Nigel Irens and Benoit Cabaret's three dimensional CAD design into a uniquely cut female mould.
This ensured a perfectly fitted and composite form for the hull and the deck. The biggest advantage was that almost no fairing or filling was required, keeping weight to an absolute minimum.
mouldCAM were also able to build reference markers into Sodeb’Os hull and deck moulds. As a result, Boatspeed could use these key markings as accurate guide points during the build process, cutting production time significantly.
Colville collected Sodeb’O from Sydney, Australia in July 2007. "I'm very impressed with the boat, not so much by its size, but by how well proportioned and balanced it is."
Colville had to abort his first attempt to beat Ellen MacArthur's single-handed non-stop round the world record of 71 days in early 2008. However, shortly before doing so he set the new world record for “Outright singlehanded 24 hour world record”. This shows the great potential of Sodeb'O. Colville will continue on his quest for more world records.
