mouldCAM: We shape innovative design client map

Chiron's new school bus

case study: New state-of-the-art 57 seat bus shapes up for the school run.

Respected bus manufacturing company Chiron CV has again turned to mouldCAM to produce plugs for the newest addition to their growing fleet, a state-of-the-art 57 seat bus specifically designed for school runs and charter.

The CS120 was unveiled at the 2009 Australian Bus Show in Sydney, Australia . Both its front and back panels, including bumper bars and window trims, were produced from a series of complex CAD designs by Chiron CV's team of Australian engineers, and then precision cut by mouldCAM using CNC technology.

"We used to try and do this work by hand" according to Chiron CV's CEO, Lorenz Eberl. "But it took so long, and the handmade plugs were never able to deliver the consistency we needed.  There'd always be extra labour involved to get us there. The very first time we tried CNC technology I knew there was no turning back".

In Chiron CV's case, accuracy and reliability have been driving factors in their quest to find the perfect CNC partner.

"Accuracy of the plugs is very important to us. If the plugs are accurate, then we know the fibreglass moulds we can make from them are also going to be accurate. When you're making 200-300 parts from each mould, you want to make sure it's right the first time, and that each piece fits together perfectly" said Lorenz. "But that wasn't all. We also needed to find a supplier that we could trust. Someone experienced in the capabilities of CNC technology, who could collaborate with us on getting the most out of our designs, and who instinctively knew what was going to be right for us. mouldCAM has never let us down. Professionally, it has been an absolute pleasure to work with them".

The distinctive shape of the CS120 will be a familiar sight on Australian roads for many years to come, with the bus already servicing school bus runs in rural Australia and mining communities in remote Western Australia.

And CNC machining will continue to play a pivotal role in Chiron CV's  continued  product development. As their CEO says, "As far as I'm concerned, it's the only way to go in the future".
